A Call to Limited Partners: Redefining the Investor's Role in Systemic Change

Dear Fellow Stewards of Capital,

For too long, the relationship between limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs) has been defined by a narrow transaction: you provide capital, we provide returns, communicated through quarterly reports and annual meetings. This model of passive, disengaged capital is a core part of the problem we seek to solve. At the Chicago Institute of Capital Alchemy, we invite you into a different kind of partnership—one where you are not just a funder, but a co-creator in the work of systemic transformation.

The Active LP: Engaging Beyond the Checkbook

We propose a new covenant between investor and investee. First, we ask for Patient Capital with Purposeful Horizons. Commit your funds for a minimum of 12 years, not the standard 10, with an understanding that the deepest alchemical transformations—rebuilding soil, nurturing worker-owned businesses, revitalizing neighborhoods—cannot be rushed. Accept that the J-curve of impact may be deeper and longer than in venture capital.

Second, we ask for Engaged Expertise. Many of you sit atop vast reservoirs of knowledge—in industry, law, community relations, technology. We invite you to join our 'LP Council,' not as a ceremonial body, but as an active resource. Participate in due diligence calls for investments in your area of expertise. Make introductions from your network to our portfolio companies. Use your influence to advocate for policy changes that would benefit the entire ecosystem we're building.

Transparency and Shared Learning

Third, we commit to a level of transparency that goes far beyond financial statements. You will have access to our live impact dashboard and raw, anonymized data from our portfolio. We will host regular, deep-dive learning sessions—not sales pitches—where we analyze our failures as rigorously as our successes. We ask that you engage with this material, challenge us, and share your own reflections. This creates a community of learning among our investor base, breaking down the silos that typically separate foundations, pensions, and families.

Aligning Your Entire Balance Sheet

Finally, we challenge you to consider the alchemy of your own entire balance sheet. For foundations, this means moving beyond a 5% payout from an otherwise conventional endowment. It means making significant Program-Related Investments (PRIs) and Mission-Related Investments (MRIs) across your portfolio. For family offices, it means examining the source of your wealth and asking if it can be reinvested to heal the systems it may have historically impacted. For pension funds, it means partnering with unions, as we do, to ensure worker capital builds worker power.

This is not a sacrifice of returns; it is a sophisticated strategy for risk mitigation and opportunity capture in a world facing climate breakdown and inequality. By becoming an active LP in the work of capital alchemy, you are not just outsourcing impact; you are directly participating in the creation of a more resilient, equitable, and generative economy. You are transforming your role from capital owner to system steward. We invite you to join us in this grand and necessary experiment.
