The financial world is replete with theories of impact, but practical pathways for emerging managers to deploy catalytic capital are few and fraught with barriers. Our Catalytic Capital Fellowship is a direct response to this gap. This two-year, full-time program selects ten exceptional individuals annually who demonstrate not only financial acumen but a deep commitment to place-based or thematic systemic change.
Fellows engage in a rigorous curriculum divided into four core modules. The first module, Theory of Change & Capital Stack Architecture, teaches fellows how to design investment theses that explicitly link financial instruments to social outcomes. They learn to construct layered capital stacks that blend concessionary, risk-tolerant, and market-rate capital to de-risk ventures for traditional follow-on funding.
The second module, Due Diligence for Systemic Impact, moves beyond standard ESG checklists. Fellows are trained in proprietary frameworks for assessing an enterprise's potential for network effects, its governance model's resilience, and its authentic embeddedness within stakeholder communities. This includes intensive fieldwork and stakeholder interviews.
The third module is Portfolio Construction & Active Stewardship. Here, fellows manage a live, seed-stage portfolio funded by the Institute's endowment. They are responsible for sourcing deals, negotiating terms, and—critically—providing post-investment support. This is not passive capital; fellows work alongside entrepreneurs as strategic partners.
The final module, Measuring What Matters, focuses on impact measurement and management (IMM). Fellows implement mixed-methods approaches, combining quantitative metrics on job quality, carbon reduction, or wealth creation with qualitative narratives that capture less tangible forms of value, such as community agency or institutional trust.
Graduates do not simply re-enter the market; they join the Institute's permanent Catalyst Network. This network provides ongoing peer support, co-investment opportunities, and access to a shared platform of legal and operational resources. The goal is to create a critical mass of practitioners who can collectively shift market norms. The fellowship represents our core belief: the alchemy of capital requires skilled, intentional, and supported alchemists. We are investing in the people who will redefine the craft of investment for decades to come.
