Measuring Success Beyond IRR: The Alchemical Scorecard for Investments

The Failure of the Single Metric

The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and its cousin, the Multiple on Invested Capital (MOIC), have long been the undisputed kings of private investment performance. They are clean, comparable, and financially conclusive. However, they are also dangerously reductive. They tell you nothing about how the return was achieved. Was it through financial engineering and layoffs, or through genuine innovation and market creation? Did it leave the company stronger or hollowed out? Did it benefit a narrow set of investors while degrading the environment or community trust? For an alchemist whose goal is intentional transformation, relying solely on IRR is like judging a master chef only by the speed at which they can cook—it misses the quality, nutrition, and artistry of the meal. We need a scorecard that reflects the multi-dimensional nature of our work.

The Four Quadrants of the Alchemical Scorecard

Our scorecard evaluates every investment across four quadrants, each with its own set of key performance indicators (KPIs). A truly successful investment must score well in all four.

Weighting, Aggregation, and the 'Alchemical Return'

We do not simply sum these scores. Different investments have different primary purposes—a deep tech startup might weight Quadrants B and D heavily, while a community infrastructure project might weight C and D. At the deal's inception, we set target ranges and weights for KPIs in each quadrant, aligned with the specific transformation thesis. During the hold period, we track progress against these targets as diligently as we track cash flow. At exit, we compile a final scorecard. The ultimate metric, which we are pioneering, is the Alchemical Return (AR). AR is a weighted, risk-adjusted composite index of the four quadrant scores. It is expressed as a number where 1.0 represents 'meeting baseline expectations for a transformational investment.' An AR of 1.5 or 2.0 indicates exceptional multi-dimensional success. This score is reported to our investors (Limited Partners) alongside the financial IRR. Over time, we are building a track record that proves high AR investments correlate with strong, durable financial returns, but also provide the non-financial returns that our LPs increasingly demand. This scorecard transforms reporting from a backward-looking financial statement into a rich narrative of change, holding us accountable to our full mission and providing a transparent blueprint of the value we have co-created with all stakeholders.
