A Historic Rift and a New Alliance

The relationship between institutional capital and organized labor has often been adversarial, with capital seeking to minimize labor costs and labor fighting for a fair share. The Chicago Institute of Capital Alchemy sees this as a destructive dynamic. We believe that strong, empowered workers are not a cost to be minimized but the essential foundation of a productive, innovative, and stable economy. Our Solidarity-Based Investment Framework is built in direct partnership with major unions, starting with those representing teachers, service workers, and tradespeople in our own city.

The Mechanics of the Union-Partnered Fund

We have co-created an investment vehicle where union pension funds are the anchor limited partners. An advisory board with equal representation from the Institute's financial experts and union leadership sets the fund's strategy. This is not a generic infrastructure fund; it is a Targeted Industry and Geography fund. Investments are directed toward sectors and projects that explicitly create high-quality, unionized jobs in regions where union members live and work. Examples include retrofitting public schools for energy efficiency (using unionized trades), building domestic supply chains for renewable components, and converting distressed retail properties into unionized childcare centers.

Beyond Job Creation: Supporting the Labor Ecosystem

Our partnership goes deeper than just job-site requirements. A portion of the fund's management fees is reinvested into the labor movement itself. This supports:

• Worker Ownership Transitions: Providing technical assistance and bridge financing for retiring business owners to sell their firms to employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) or cooperatives, preserving jobs and creating wealth for workers.
• Apprenticeship and Training Hubs: Co-investing in state-of-the-art training facilities that are jointly managed by unions and community colleges, ensuring a pipeline of skilled workers for our portfolio companies.
• Policy Advocacy: Jointly advocating for public policies that create a favorable environment for high-road employers, such as prevailing wage laws and project labor agreements.
